This project demonstrates the power of adaptive reuse, turning an existing 2-car garage into a high-design lakeside guesthouse. The original structure was already uniquely tilted toward the pool and raised just enough to clear the terracing. We popped up a shed dormer to allow for a large wall of windows, unlocking the full potential of the space and allowing for unlimited light and views of the lake beyond.
Closing up the garage door and landscaping the old concrete apron allowed us to reorient the views to the lakeside and provide privacy on the public side.
French doors with sidelight and transom windows flood the space with natural light.
In the guest house we were able to add a kitchenette with a mini-fridge, in-wall microwave, and coffee maker while still allowing for ample counter top space.
Transition spaces between rooms make a great place to add storage. Instead of a typical cased opening, we "thickened" the wall to create a dry bar and a more dramatic passage.
One large room provides both sleeping and living spaces, but doesn't skimp on luxury. The large window wall that opens to a Juliet balcony helps to make this room appear larger than it is.
A direct vent fireplace keeps the place cozy on a cold winter day, along with a cup of hot cocoa and a view of the frozen lake!
